USC Opens Veronica Atkins Lifestyles Intervention Lab

New lab will allow researchers to study the role of exercise, nutrition and lifestyle on childhood obesity and diabetes risk

What:

The University of Southern California (USC) officially opens the Veronica Atkins Lifestyles Intervention Lab. The lab features an exercise facility, a cooking kitchen and diagnostic facilities where clinical trials that study childhood obesity and diabetes risk will be conducted. In conjunction with the lab, USC also opens its Center for Obesity and Metabolic Health.

  • Michael Goran, Ph.D, The Dr. Robert C. and Veronica Atkins Chair in Childhood Obesity and Diabetes and professor of preventive medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC

  • Michael Garvey, DumbBell Man Fitness Equipment Company
  • Children participating in obesity and diabetes risk clinical trials

Background:

The lab was funded by The Atkins Foundation, which seeks to positively impact disease prevention and health management worldwide by supporting nutritional research and educational programs. The Foundation provides grants to support independent scientific, evidence-based and clinical research that examines the role of metabolism and nutrition in obesity, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s Disease and other major health issues confronting society today.
