Cardiovascular Thoracic Institute
Launched in August 2006, the USC Cardiovascular Thoracic Institute includes clinical faculty—cardiologists, vascular surgeons and others—as well as scientific faculty. The Institute is currently housed within the Health Care Consultation II building, with research faculty temporarily assigned space in the Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute building. Preliminary planning is under way for the Health Care Consultation III building, which will be the future home of the Cardiovascular Thoracic Institute’s clinical services.
Institute for Genetic Medicine
The Institute for Genetic Medicine (IGM) is an interdisciplinary academic research institute dedicated to programs focused on the application of genetic and molecular technology to the study and treatment of human disease. The IGM opened on the Health Sciences Campus in 1997. Since then, the IGM team has consistently broken new ground in the field of genetic medicine and research.
Institute for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Research
In July 1980 USC established the Institute for Health Promotion & Disease Prevention Research (IPR), dedicated to the advancement of interdisciplinary research and education to improve the health and well-being of individuals and whole communities at the local and global levels. In the ensuing years, IPR has grown from a three-person team to several hundred faculty, research associates, postdoctoral fellows and students from the undergraduate to post-doctoral levels. IPR collaborates with 11 schools at USC, as well as universities, research institutes and public health agencies on five continents.
The Saban Research Institute of Childrens Hospital Los Angeles
Created in 1993, the mission of the Saban Research Institute of Childrens Hospital Los Angeles is to foster an environment of scientific excellence where biomedical research will lead to discoveries involving the molecular and clinical understanding of childhood development and the implementation of procedures to diagnose, treat and prevent pediatric diseases and promote child health. Currently, there are more than 100 physician-scientists and researchers who are engaged in more than 250 active studies. These scientists also serve on the faculty at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and join forces with other prestigious pediatric research efforts throughout the world. Through the integration of basic science with clinical expertise, the Saban Research Institute encourages the quick transfer of the best discoveries from the laboratory bench to the bedside of patients who need them.
Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute
Dedicated to the research of neurological and psychiatric diseases, the Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California aims to better understand the neurological disorders that result when the delicate wiring of the brain and nervous system fails. The Institute opened in January 2003 and is funded in part by a $110 million gift from the W.M. Keck Foundation. The gift designated $22 million to build the Institute’s facility on USC’s Health Sciences Campus.
