USC School of Dentistry
About
Founded in 1897, the University of Southern California School of Dentistry is a private professional school with a unique heritage and an international reputation. It was the first dental school in Southern California, and for 56 years the only dental school in the Southwestern United States. In the School’s 100-year-plus history, it has graduated more than 12,000 health professionals in dentistry, dental hygiene and dental specialties. Many of these graduates have distinguished themselves as innovators in the art and science of dentistry and as leaders in dental education, research and the profession.
Noted for its clinical education, problem-based pedagogy and scientific research programs, the USC School of Dentistry has formed a unique alignment with USC's programs in biokinesiology and physical therapy (founded in 1945) and occupational science and occupational therapy (founded in 1942). This alignment offers opportunities to create innovative practice models and research collaborations. The School continues to provide its students with an unparalleled professional education combined with equally respected research and clinical care programs.
In addition to being an academic leader, the USC School of Dentistry provides oral health care to thousands of Southern California individuals each year, including children, elderly and indigent patients who receive treatment through the School’s community outreach programs. For example, USC’s Mobile Dental Clinic Program has provided dental treatment to more than 79,000 children from low-income families throughout the state of California during its 40-year history.
